Outpatient-clinic evidence check

Review one proposed clinic evidence item before you prepare it. This is a prompt for discussion, not a judgement on whether the GMC will accept it.

ONE ITEM · SIX QUESTIONS

Check your evidence idea

Think about one real outpatient-clinic evidence item. Select an answer for each prompt; no document, patient detail or free text is requested. Your answers stay on this page and disappear when it closes.

1Does it show how you prioritise referrals?

CiP 1 includes assessing GP and interdepartmental referrals, recognising urgency and dealing appropriately with unsuitable referrals.

2Does it show assessment and investigation decisions?

A clinic record should show a focused assessment and why an investigation was requested, interpreted or avoided—not just a diagnosis label.

3Does it show shared decisions and accessible communication?

The GMC descriptors include explaining a plan, involving the patient appropriately and adapting communication to their needs.

4Does it show safe prioritisation when care cannot wait?

CiP 1 includes recognising urgent conditions that need admission from clinic and accounting for comorbidity.

5Does it show an implemented plan and follow-up?

A recommendation alone may not show that the plan was carried out, documented and communicated across the care pathway.

6Is the evidence current, attributable and suitable to prepare?

Check currency, your own role, breadth across clinic work, and GMC anonymisation and verification requirements.

FICTIONAL WORKED EXAMPLE

A clinic activity count does not show the decisions

Starting item

A clinic timetable and attendance summary show that a doctor ran ENT clinics. They do not, on their own, show referral prioritisation, clinical reasoning, communication or follow-through.

Stronger evidence discussion

Check whether suitable, verifiable material from routine practice can demonstrate the doctor’s own referral triage, focused assessment, investigation decisions, explanation of options, urgent escalation when relevant and documented follow-up. Seek feedback on breadth and currency; do not recreate records after the event.

This example is illustrative, not an evidence prescription. Use the full current guidance to judge what to prepare. Never enter patient-identifiable information into this tool.

SOURCE OF TRUTH

Check the current requirements

The GMC ENT guidance describes Capability in Practice 1, “Manages an Out-Patient Clinic”, together with evidence currency, anonymisation and verification requirements. Read the whole document before relying on this prompt.
