Ward and inpatient evidence check

Review one proposed ward or inpatient-care evidence item. The prompts focus on decisions and continuity of care, not how many ward rounds you attended. They cannot determine whether the GMC will accept an item.

ONE ITEM · SIX QUESTIONS

Check your evidence idea

Think about one real ward or inpatient-care evidence item. Select an answer for each prompt; no document, patient detail or free text is requested. Your answers stay on this page and disappear when it closes.

1Does it show how you prioritise unwell inpatients?

CiP 3 includes identifying at the start of a ward round who needs immediate attention, not simply recording that a round occurred.

2Does it show interpretation and an updated plan?

The guidance covers focused assessment, available documentation and investigation results, synthesis and a management plan.

3Does it show recognition of a changing course?

Evidence should demonstrate how you recognised medical or surgical complications and decided whether intervention or re-intervention was needed.

4Does it show multidisciplinary coordination?

CiP 3 includes appropriate team participation, cross-specialty working and making each person's role in the plan clear.

5Does it show safe handover and discharge planning?

A ward-round entry alone may not show that actions were completed, communicated and reflected in discharge advice and follow-up.

6Is it current, attributable and suitable to prepare?

Consider breadth of inpatient work, your own role, currency and GMC anonymisation and verification requirements.

FICTIONAL WORKED EXAMPLE

A ward-round attendance log is not the whole care pathway

Starting item

A list of ward rounds confirms attendance. Alone, it does not show who the doctor prioritised, how results changed a plan, whether a complication was recognised, or what happened at discharge.

Stronger evidence discussion

Consider whether suitable, contemporaneous and verifiable material from routine practice shows the doctor’s own assessment and decisions, response to a changing course, coordination with the team and documented follow-through. Discuss breadth and currency with a suitable supervisor. Do not recreate records after the event.

This fictional comparison is illustrative, not a prescribed evidence set. Never enter patient-identifiable information into this tool.

Check the current requirements

The GMC ENT guidance describes Capability in Practice 3, “Manages ward rounds and in-patients”, and separate evidence-submission requirements. Read the full current document before relying on this planning prompt.
