Emergency-take evidence check

Review one proposed emergency-take evidence item before preparing it. The prompts focus on your own acute decisions and follow-through; they cannot determine whether the GMC will accept an item.

ONE ITEM · SIX QUESTIONS

Check your evidence idea

Think about one real emergency-take evidence item. Select an answer for each prompt; no document, patient detail or free text is requested. Your answers stay on this page and disappear when it closes.

1Does it show real emergency-take work and your role?

A rota shows availability, not the breadth of acute presentations you assessed or the decisions you made.

2Does it show immediate prioritisation and stabilisation?

CiP 2 includes prompt assessment of a deteriorating patient, resuscitative treatment and initial management, including sepsis where relevant.

3Does it show clinical synthesis?

A history, focused examination, investigations and comorbidity should lead to a reasoned diagnosis and plan, not a list of findings.

4Does it show a definite management choice?

The guidance covers conservative versus operative decisions, explaining the plan and coordinating perioperative care when needed.

5Does it show what happened next?

Emergency care includes handover, ongoing or postoperative care, complication management, discharge and follow-up—not just the initial review.

6Is the evidence current and suitable to prepare?

Check breadth, recency, attribution to your own practice, and GMC requirements for anonymisation and verification.

FICTIONAL WORKED EXAMPLE

An on-call rota does not show the emergency decisions

Starting item

A rota confirms scheduled on-call duties. By itself, it does not demonstrate the range of presentations actually assessed, the doctor’s own prioritisation, management decisions, handover or subsequent care.

Stronger evidence discussion

Consider whether suitable, contemporaneous and verifiable material from routine practice shows acute assessment and stabilisation, clinical synthesis, a management recommendation, team coordination and safe follow-through. Discuss breadth and currency with a suitable supervisor. Do not recreate records after the event.

This fictional comparison is illustrative, not a prescribed evidence set. Never enter patient-identifiable information into this tool.

Check the current requirements

The GMC ENT guidance describes Capability in Practice 2, “Manages the Unselected Emergency Take”, and separate evidence-submission requirements. Read the full current document before relying on this planning prompt.
