Operating-list evidence check

Review one proposed evidence item before you spend time preparing it. This is a prompt for discussion, not a judgement on whether the GMC will accept it.

ONE ITEM · SIX QUESTIONS

Check your evidence idea

Think about one real operating-list evidence item. Select an answer for each prompt; no document, patient detail or free text is requested. Your answers stay on this page and disappear when it closes.

1Is it current?

Check the evidence period and any exceptions in the current ENT guidance. A date alone does not establish current competence.

2Does it show your own role and judgement?

A record should make your contribution clear rather than merely showing that you were present or that an operation occurred.

3Does it cover more than the procedure itself?

CiP 4 spans patient selection, options and consent, list preparation, team brief, operative plan, notes and postoperative review.

4Does it demonstrate safety and adaptation?

Look for evidence of risk assessment, team communication, altered operative strategy when needed, and appropriate complication management.

5Is it supported by a suitable range of evidence?

One item cannot be assumed to demonstrate the breadth of an operating-list capability. Consider case mix, assessment and feedback against the SSG.

6Can it be submitted appropriately?

Before submission, GMC guidance requires attention to anonymisation, verification, translation where needed, and its user-guide structure.

FICTIONAL WORKED EXAMPLE

An operation note alone tells only part of the story

Starting item

An anonymised operation note confirms that a procedure took place and records the operative findings. It does not, by itself, establish the applicant’s full role in selecting the patient, planning the list, obtaining consent, leading the team or managing follow-up.

Stronger evidence discussion

Check whether appropriate, verifiable material from routine practice can show the applicant’s own decisions across the pathway: selection and shared decision-making, list planning and team brief, intraoperative judgement, complete documentation, and postoperative review. Discuss any missing domains with a supervisor; do not create records retrospectively.

Evidence types and amounts depend on the full, current guidance and the applicant’s circumstances. Never place patient-identifiable information into this tool.

SOURCE OF TRUTH

Check the current requirements

The GMC ENT guidance describes Capability in Practice 4, “Manages the Operating List”, and sets out evidence submission, currency, anonymisation and verification requirements. Read the whole document before relying on this prompt.
