MRCS PART A · COVERAGE MAP

What is covered. What comes next.

A topic-level content map—not a score, progress tracker or claim of syllabus completion.

Mapped on 2 October 2026 to the content guide currently linked by the Intercollegiate MRCS candidate guidance page (August 2021 guide). “Partial” means selected topics only. Availability does not certify exam readiness. Other Clinora exam courses are not counted as MRCS coverage.

Paper 1 · Applied basic sciences

Applied surgical anatomyPartial

Selected thoracic, abdominal, pelvic, perineal and head/neck relationships, cranial embryology and limb nerves. Each is a bounded lesson, not comprehensive regional coverage.

Still needed

Remaining regional anatomy; abdominal lymphatics; broader head/neck and embryology; brain, spine and autonomic anatomy; breast; limb vessels and joints; systematic surface and imaging anatomy.

Applied surgical physiologyPartial

Selected V/Q and oxygen-content models, systemic oxygen transport, perfusion, fluids, renal concentration, intestinal lipid transport, metabolic and endocrine applications; not a systematic physiology course.

Still needed

Broader cardiovascular and respiratory foundations, gastrointestinal, endocrine and neurological foundations; broader renal physiology; general physiological principles.

Applied surgical pathologyPartial

Selected cell-injury evidence and antigen recognition, wound repair, bowel mechanisms and endocrine diagnostic uncertainty.

Still needed

Broader general pathology and immunology; haematology and clinical chemistry; neoplasia; systematic organ pathology, breast, skin and lymphoreticular disease.

Surgical pharmacologyPartial

Selected linear pharmacokinetic models, anticoagulant, diabetes and steroid decisions.

Still needed

Broader mechanisms and kinetics, adverse effects and interactions; analgesia, anaesthesia, antimicrobials and other surgical medicines.

Surgical microbiologyPartial

Clinical infection recognition and selected inhibition versus killing measurements; not comprehensive microbiology teaching.

Still needed

Organisms, resistance, microbiological investigations, infection prevention and antimicrobial principles.

ImagingNot yet covered

No dedicated MRCS imaging lesson. Imaging mentioned within cases is not equivalent to image interpretation coverage.

Still needed

Systematic surgical imaging selection and interpretation with appropriately licensed images.

Data interpretation & auditPartial

Selected diagnostic-test denominators, partial verification, prevalence effects and project classification; not complete statistics or audit coverage.

Still needed

Study interpretation, diagnostic-test measures, basic statistics and audit methodology.

Paper 2 · Principles of surgery

Common surgical conditionsPartial

Selected abdominal, vascular, urological and endocrine presentations.

Still needed

Broader gastrointestinal disease; breast; cardiothoracic conditions; orthopaedics; skin, head and neck; neurosurgery; lymphoreticular disease; cancer treatment and palliative care; congenital conditions.

Perioperative managementPartial

Selected medications, complications, perfusion, wound care and non-major-haemorrhage component indications.

Still needed

Systematic preoperative and intraoperative care; nutrition; haemostasis and blood products; full postoperative and metabolic coverage.

TraumaPartial

Selected rescue decisions and limb threats.

Still needed

Comprehensive multiply injured patient assessment; fracture and dislocation patterns; wider organ-specific trauma and soft-tissue injuries.

Surgical care of childrenNot yet covered

No dedicated MRCS paediatric module.

Still needed

Age-specific assessment, common paediatric surgical conditions and perioperative considerations.

Medico-legal aspectsPartial

Selected individual-risk discussion and informed refusal; not a complete medico-legal course.

Still needed

Consent, capacity, confidentiality, documentation and professional responsibilities in surgical scenarios.

COVERAGE-LED DEVELOPMENT

Next expansion priorities

  1. Fill regional anatomy gaps. Start with thorax and abdominal viscera/vessels; then pelvis/perineum and head/neck. Connect each concept to original SBAs.
  2. Build missing basic-science foundations. Organ physiology and pathology, then structured pharmacology, microbiology, imaging and data interpretation.
  3. Broaden surgical principles. Add uncovered specialties, children and medico-legal decisions, rather than repeating existing emergency scenarios.
  4. Validate assessment breadth. Map each question to a specific syllabus objective before building balanced mixed practice and timed mocks.

These are planned priorities, not available products. Each release should update this map with its actual scope, reviewed questions and remaining gaps.
